Police arrest 20 over attack on MP at Matovu burial

Police have arrested 20 suspects following an attack on Kibuku County MP Kinobere Hebert and other mourners during the burial of former Busiro South MP Charles Matovu in Wakiso District.

The attack occurred on October 25 at Kungu Lutale along Nakawuka Road, where mourners had gathered to pay their last respects to the former legislator.

Police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke said officers in Entebbe Division, under Kampala Metropolitan Police South, were investigating the incident.

According to police, the attack was allegedly carried out by a group of National Unity Platform (NUP) activists opposed to the presence of National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporters at the burial.

MP Kinobere’s vehicle was reportedly damaged, with the attackers deflating its tyres, forcing him to flee the scene to avoid harm.

Police said officers intervened and secured the affected mourners, including those who had sought refuge, before arresting 20 suspects.

The suspects are being detained at Entebbe Police Station as investigations continue.

Rusoke urged the public to respect mourners regardless of their political affiliation and refrain from violence, intimidation and destruction of property.

He also called for peaceful conduct at public gatherings to prevent confrontations that could endanger lives and property.
