Elwelu’s arrest sparks tension in Teso as security tightens at homes

Tension is mounting in the Teso sub-region following the arrest of retired Lieutenant General Peter Elwelu, with security operatives reportedly deployed at his two residences amid growing uncertainty over the circumstances surrounding his detention.

Elwelu, who has strong family and personal ties to the region, reportedly maintains two homes in Teso, including one in Soroti District, where residents are closely monitoring developments following news of his arrest.

Soroti Resident District Commissioner Haji Imuran Mulunga, who is based in the district where Elwelu has his second home, declined to comment on the matter, describing it as a high-profile case.

The Acting Army Spokesperson, Colonel Chris Magezi, announced Elwelu’s arrest in a social media post on Monday evening but did not immediately disclose the specific charges the retired military officer is expected to face.

Magezi also revealed that security forces had recently recovered 15 firearms, military uniforms and two pickup trucks allegedly linked to Elwelu.

He said the retired general would be charged and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The arrest has attracted considerable attention in Teso, with residents following the unfolding developments over concerns about the implications of the case for the region.
