Mob justice claims two lives in Kigezi within two days

Two people have been killed in separate mob justice incidents in Kigezi Sub-region within two days, prompting police to launch investigations and warn residents against taking the law into their own hands.

The latest incident occurred on October 30 in Ryaruhinda Cell, Mukarangye Ward, Katuna Town Council, Kabale District, where a 30-year-old man was beaten to death after being suspected of burglary.

The deceased, identified as Tumwesigye Amon, was a resident of Karago Cell, Kyasano Parish in Kamuganguzi Sub-county, Kabale District.

According to police, residents raised an alarm at about 9pm after suspecting Tumwesigye of involvement in a burglary. The alarm attracted a mob that reportedly descended on him and beat him to death.

Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime said the killing was one of two mob justice cases recorded in the region within two days.

The other victim, identified as Akandinda Aaron, was also killed by a mob in Kanungu District.

Tumushime condemned the killings, warning residents against taking the law into their own hands and reminding them that mob justice is a criminal offence under the Penal Code Act.

He said police had launched operations to identify and arrest those responsible for the two killings.

Police have urged members of the public to report suspected criminal activity to law enforcement agencies and allow the relevant authorities to investigate and prosecute suspects in accordance with the law.
