The campaign was launched at Kizinda Playground, where PLU leaders outlined their mobilisation plans ahead of the next presidential election.
Kasambya County MP David Kabanda, the executive secretary in the Office of the PLU National Chairman, said the exercise was intended to demonstrate public support for Gen. Muhoozi and respond to claims that his anticipated candidacy was being imposed on Ugandans by his father, President Museveni.
Kabanda said Gen. Muhoozi would be on the presidential ballot in 2031 and that President Museveni would play a leading role in mobilising support for his anticipated bid.
He said Gen. Muhoozi would seek to build on his father’s legacy, citing achievements in socio-economic transformation, infrastructure development, peace and stability.
Kabanda also responded to criticism that Gen. Muhoozi was harsh, arguing that the PLU chairman was firm against individuals seeking to misuse the country’s resources.
The campaign comes amid the PLU’s efforts to mobilise support for Gen. Muhoozi while maintaining its links with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Igara East MP Michael Maranga Mawanda, the PLU director of mobilisation, said the group was preparing for the 2031 election, when its supporters hope to vote for Gen. Muhoozi.
Bushenyi District Woman MP Annet Katusiime Mugisha said the PLU and the NRM shared a common political foundation.
Igara West MP Amanya Cohen Kyampene called on supporters to avoid divisions and promote the values of the two organisations.
Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality MP Hajji Iddi Basajjabalaba urged supporters to maintain discipline and respect during the mobilisation exercise. He said supporters expected Gen. Muhoozi to address corruption.
The launch also featured a free medical camp, where residents received medical assessments. The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) provided services to residents seeking assistance with national identity cards.
The PLU, chaired by Gen. Muhoozi, says the nationwide signature collection exercise is intended to gauge and build support for his proposed candidacy in the 2031 presidential election.
