Kampala road upgrade to provide drainage channels, pedestrian walkways

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has launched a four-month project to upgrade the 400-metre Biina A Road in Nakawa Division to bitumen standard, incorporating covered drainage channels, pedestrian walkways and street lighting to improve road safety and security.

Kampala Lord Mayor Ronald Balimwezo, who presided over the launch, said the project was part of KCCA’s broader road improvement programme aimed at upgrading the city’s infrastructure.

DOTT Services project manager Eng Dhanaraaju said the covered drainage channels would also serve as pedestrian walkways, while street lighting would improve security and create a better environment for businesses and residents.

The project is being undertaken by DOTT Services, with MBW Consulting Ltd serving as the supervising consultant.

The company's environmental, social and governance specialist, Christian Kanyesigye, said the contractor expected to complete the works within four months. He added that walls affected during construction would be restored.

Balimwezo urged Local Council leaders to mobilise residents and support efforts to secure the right of way required for road construction.

“As LCs, you need to be at the forefront of convincing residents to volunteer land so that a standard road is constructed in their localities,” he said.

The upgraded Biina A Road is expected to improve connectivity between the Butabika-Kirombe and Old Butabika roads.

LC1 chairperson Andrew Kirigwajjo pledged residents’ cooperation to facilitate the smooth implementation of the project.
