Police Deploy 50 Officers After Deadly Attacks in Mubende

Police have deployed 50 additional officers from the Field Force Unit (FFU) to Kitenga Sub-county in Mubende District following a series of attacks that left three people dead and three others injured.

The attacks occurred in the early hours of October 9, during Uganda’s Independence Day celebrations, when assailants reportedly raided homes in different villages across the sub-county.

Among those killed were Ivan Sserwanja, 29, and his pregnant wife, Rose Nakalanzi, 26, residents of Lukaya Village.

The injured include Onesmus Tumwebaze and his wife, Agather Kukundakwe, both residents of Kayanja Village, and Sophia Nalukenge, 40, of Lukaya Village.

Wamala Regional Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi said security had been heightened across Kitenga Sub-county, with police intensifying operations to track down those responsible for the attacks.

Kigozi said intelligence-led operations conducted by police in Mubende, in collaboration with their counterparts in Ibanda District, had led to the arrest of a suspect identified as Nelson Nuwataho.

The suspect has since been transferred to Mubende Police Station for interrogation as investigations continue.

Kigozi added that the additional officers had been deployed from the FFU headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, to reinforce security operations in the affected area.

The deployment follows growing concern among residents, who have called for increased security following the deadly attacks.

Police have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue and efforts to apprehend the assailants are intensified.
