Mbarara Intensifies Efforts to Protect River Rwizi Amid Environmental Degradation

Authorities in Mbarara have called for increased community participation in environmental conservation to address the growing degradation of River Rwizi and its surrounding ecosystems.

The call follows the distribution of more than 30,000 assorted tree seedlings to residents in Mbarara City South under an initiative led by the Ministry of Water and Environment in partnership with Abahumuza Initiative.

The initiative seeks to encourage tree planting, restore degraded areas, protect riverbanks and strengthen community resilience against the effects of climate change.

Speaking during the launch of the distribution exercise, the Assistant Resident City Commissioner for Mbarara City South, Muganda Sam, said environmental degradation remains a concern that requires collective responsibility from both authorities and local communities.

He urged residents to embrace tree planting, particularly in areas surrounding River Rwizi, saying trees would help protect the environment while providing communities with food and alternative sources of income.

Mbarara City Natural Resources Officer, Edmond Aryampika, said the city was committed to working with individuals and organisations involved in environmental protection, noting that natural resources play an important role in sustaining livelihoods.

He also cautioned residents who allow their animals to roam freely within the city, warning that livestock found destroying planted trees and other vegetation could lead to legal action against their owners.

Abahumuza Initiative Secretary General, Steven Kebesa, said the tree distribution programme was part of broader efforts to restore River Rwizi and protect its catchment areas.

Kebesa expressed concern over the degradation of riverbanks, particularly in areas affected by sand mining and other human activities, which he said threaten the river's ecological stability.

He called for stronger measures to protect the riverbanks and encouraged residents living near River Rwizi to plant and maintain trees as part of efforts to safeguard the water resource.

He added that the organisation was incorporating sustainability measures into the programme to ensure the seedlings survive and contribute to long-term environmental restoration.

Mbarara District LCV Chairperson, Hygiene Twongirwe Kururagire, commended the Ministry of Water and Environment and Abahumuza Initiative for supporting the conservation campaign, saying it would benefit both the environment and local communities.

Some of the beneficiaries welcomed the intervention, saying the trees would provide food, generate income and contribute to environmental protection.
