The internationally recognised marathon is scheduled for August 22 in Kasese District and is expected to attract thousands of athletes, spectators and visitors from Uganda and abroad.
Speaking during a media briefing in Kasese town, former State Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Godfrey Kabyanga, said the event presents a significant economic opportunity for local communities.
Kabyanga, a former mayor of Kasese Municipality, encouraged residents to provide food, accommodation, transport and other tourism-related services to visitors expected in the district.
He said the influx of visitors could enable local businesses and individuals to earn income while showcasing the region’s tourism attractions.
“The marathon provides an opportunity for Ugandans to earn money while promoting the country's tourism potential,” Kabyanga said.
He also encouraged participants and tourists to use their visit to explore the Rwenzori Mountains and other attractions in Kasese and the wider Rwenzori region.
According to Kabyanga, more than 4,000 runners had already registered for the marathon, with additional spectators and tourists expected to travel to Kasese for the event.
Meanwhile, Kasese District Police Commander, SP Hassan Hiwumbire, said security agencies had put in place measures to ensure the safety of participants, spectators and visitors throughout the marathon.
The marathon is expected to provide a platform for promoting sports tourism while boosting business activity and increasing the visibility of Kasese as a key tourism destination.
