Speaker Orders Kamuntu to Explain Spate of Killings

The Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Marksons Oboth, has directed the Minister of Internal Affairs, Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, to explain to Parliament on Wednesday the escalating insecurity and spate of killings in Kazo, Ibanda, Kiruhura, Kitagwenda and other districts.

The directive follows concerns raised by Members of Parliament over persistent murders in their constituencies, with legislators warning that the incidents have heightened fear among residents and raised questions about the effectiveness of security interventions.

Raising a matter of national importance, Kyaka Central MP Tom Bright told Parliament that more than five people had been killed in his constituency within a month, leaving residents anxious about their safety.

The MP called for urgent government intervention to address the killings and prevent further loss of life.

The concerns also extend to other parts of the country, including Buwekula South, where legislators have raised alarm over continued insecurity.

Meanwhile, the Shadow Minister for Defence and Internal Affairs, Joseph Sewungu, has urged the government to train Local Council chairpersons to strengthen community-level crime prevention.

Sewungu said equipping local leaders with the necessary skills could improve cooperation between communities and the Uganda Police Force, particularly in identifying suspicious activities and reporting criminal incidents.

The statement from the Internal Affairs Minister is expected to address the security situation in the affected districts and outline measures being taken by the government to curb the killings and protect residents.
