The deceased has been identified as Mugabe John Bosco, whose parents are Turyatemba Wilber and Kyomukama Agnes, residents of Bunagana Village, Mayengo Parish, Kamuganguzi Sub-county, Kabale District.
According to a police statement issued by Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime, the incident is believed to have occurred on October 16, 2026, at about 9am in Bunagana Village.
Police said suspicion arose on October 20 when Twinomugabe Deus, an uncle to Kyomukama, reportedly met her at Bunagana Trading Centre without the baby.
Tumushime said the relative became suspicious because Kyomukama was reportedly accustomed to carrying the child on her back whenever she moved around.
When asked about the baby's whereabouts, she allegedly told him that she had handed the child over to a woman from Kabale Town to take care of him.
Police said the baby's body was recovered and taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination to establish the cause of death.
The circumstances surrounding the child's death remain unclear, and police investigations are ongoing.
The police statement alleges that Turyatemba and others were involved in the killing. However, the circumstances of the incident and the roles of the individuals mentioned have yet to be established through investigations.
