Mugabi said fish was an important source of protein and other essential nutrients required for healthy growth and development, urging households to make it a regular component of their diets.
He made the remarks during the launch of a new fish outlet operated by Yalelo Uganda along Tataitwe Road in Mbarara City, where he emphasised the importance of access to nutritious food in improving public health and productivity.
The mayor said increasing fish consumption would not only benefit individual households but also support the country's broader efforts to improve nutritional standards.
He welcomed Yalelo Uganda's investment in the city, saying the outlet would expand access to fresh fish while contributing to local economic activity through employment creation and tax revenue.
Mugabi also urged fish traders at Mbarara Central Market not to perceive the new outlet as a threat to their businesses, saying it would strengthen the supply chain and create opportunities for both traders and consumers.
“Fish traders should not be under pressure because of this outlet. Yalelo will also provide fish to traders and help improve access to fresh fish,” he said.
Byaruhanga John, the Mbarara City South Division Commercial Officer, echoed the mayor's call, urging parents to include fish in their children's meals because of its high protein content and nutritional benefits.
Mugisha Ali Boss, the Kisenyi Cell chairperson, commended Yalelo Uganda for establishing the outlet, saying the investment would create employment opportunities for residents and improve access to fish in the area.
Monday Enock, a fish trader at Mbarara Central Market, welcomed the development, saying it would help address challenges traders have faced in accessing fresh fish.
“We have been facing challenges getting fresh fish. This outlet will help us access fish more easily,” he said.
Nahason Musinguzi, Yalelo Uganda's Marketing Manager for the Western Region fish business, thanked Mbarara City Council for granting the company permission to establish the outlet.
He pledged that the company would maintain quality standards and ensure timely delivery of fish to consumers and traders.
Musinguzi said Yalelo Uganda would continue working with city authorities, traders and residents to improve fish availability and support efforts to promote its consumption.
