The call was made at Bushenyi Primary School Ruhandagazi, which caters for children with disabilities, during the launch of activities for the district’s Youth Day celebrations scheduled for November 7, 2026.
Bushenyi District Youth Council chairperson Atwiine Bruce said children with disabilities face numerous challenges as they grow and called for greater attention to their welfare.
“Children with disabilities go through a lot of challenges while growing up, and they need the support of everyone in society,” Atwiine said.
NRM Youth League national general secretary Natasha Ahereza urged leaders at all levels to prioritise the rights and welfare of people with disabilities, particularly children.
She said children with disabilities should have equal access to opportunities and services and should not be discriminated against because of their condition.
Bushenyi District Deputy Speaker and Male Youth Councillor Arineitwe Martin Zave said the decision to visit the school was intended to demonstrate solidarity with children with disabilities as part of the Youth Day activities.
Zave urged parents to respect and protect the rights of children with disabilities, saying they should be given the same opportunities as other children.
Meanwhile, Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality Male Youth Councillor Muhereza Andrew expressed concern over the continued neglect of some children with disabilities.
He urged communities to abandon discriminatory practices and ensure that children with disabilities are supported to realise their potential.
During the visit, the youth donated books, pens, pencils, balls, sanitary pads, rice and other essential items to the school.
The activities are part of preparations for the Bushenyi District Youth Day celebrations scheduled for November 7, 2026.
