Police investigate attack on Bugoye Police Station

Police in Kasese District are investigating an attack on Bugoye Police Station in which one of the suspected assailants was shot and later died from his injuries.

The attack occurred at about 2:40am on Thursday when a group of about six men, allegedly armed with pangas, raided the station and confronted an officer on duty at the counter.

Rwenzori East Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate said one of the attackers, identified as Masereka Zalimoni Kyanakyibi, a resident of Magoma Village, Muramba Parish, Bugoye Sub-county, allegedly attempted to disarm the officer.

The officer resisted and shot Kyanakyibi in the leg, prompting the other attackers to flee after reportedly realising that more officers were at the station.

Maate said the injured suspect managed to move away from the station but later succumbed to his injuries.

Following the attack, the station was reinforced by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), while the Regional Police Commander, Kasese District Police Commander and other officers from Kasese Police Division visited the scene.

Police arrested four suspects for questioning in connection with the attack. They were identified as Irumba Simon, 26; Kiiza Abson, 29, a casual worker; Kadama George, 25, a businessman; and Baluku Lenaxi, 28, a casual worker.

The four suspects are residents of Muramba II Village, Bugoye Parish, Bugoye Sub-county, Kasese District.

Police said officers visited and documented the scene, recovered one panga and conducted community policing in the area.

Kyanakyibi’s body was taken to Kasese Health Centre III mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Maate said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify all the people involved.
