Byamukama, Swedish envoy discuss investment in railway and water transport

Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama has called for increased investment in railway and water transport as government seeks to diversify Uganda’s transport network, ease pressure on roads and improve the movement of passengers and cargo.

Byamukama made the remarks during a meeting with the Swedish Ambassador to Uganda, Anna-Maria Olsson, at the Ministry of Works and Transport, where they discussed Uganda’s transport infrastructure priorities and possible areas of cooperation.

The Minister said strengthening alternative modes of transport is critical to improving connectivity and supporting economic growth, particularly through more efficient movement of goods and people.

He said railway and water transport require urgent attention to enable them to complement the road network and reduce pressure on roads.

Byamukama also emphasised the importance of strengthening partnerships with development partners to mobilise support for Uganda’s transport infrastructure priorities.

For her part, Ambassador Olsson reaffirmed Sweden’s commitment to supporting Uganda’s transport sector, particularly initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable, efficient and reliable mobility.

The meeting was attended by officials from the Ministry of Works and Transport.
