Police Step Up Security After Reported Kidnappings of Children in Kigezi

Police in the Kigezi Sub-region have stepped up security operations following two reported kidnapping incidents involving children in Kabale and Rubanda districts, amid growing concern over the safety of learners.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 30, Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime said one of the victims had been recovered, while efforts to trace the perpetrators in the second case were ongoing.

The first incident was reported in Kigongi Ward, Central Division, Kabale Municipality, where a victim was allegedly kidnapped before being rescued.

The second case involved a 14-year-old child in Bubaare Town Council, Rubanda District, whose alleged abduction was reported on Wednesday. Police said investigations were underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and apprehend those responsible.

The incidents come amid reports circulating on social media about alleged continued kidnappings of children in the region, prompting police to reassure parents, school administrators and learners of heightened security measures.

Tumushime said police had intensified intelligence-led operations, including patrols around schools, boarding facilities and major routes used by learners.

He added that security agencies were working with school administrators and local leaders to verify reported incidents and strengthen measures to protect children.

Police have urged parents to ensure their children move in groups and report suspicious individuals around schools, while school administrators have been asked to tighten access controls and promptly report strangers found on school premises.

Boda boda riders and members of the public have also been encouraged to provide credible information that could aid investigations.

Tumushime cautioned the public against circulating unverified reports, warning that individuals found spreading false information intended to cause alarm would be arrested and prosecuted.

He reiterated that the safety of learners remained a priority for police, urging the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue.
